A Shortage of reliable information available on Chinese companies means detailed research is essential when businesses consider trading in China.
Sue Rissbrook, emerging-markets specialist and partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, in Castle Donington, said: "While the benefits of doing business with China are manifold, getting the due diligence right is absolutely imperative. There is much less information publicly available on Chinese businesses compared to their UK counterparts, so allowing sufficient time for detailed checking of the financial credentials of potential partners in advance is crucial."
Conducting due diligence also ensures potential partners are not associated with any undesirable business practices.
"Ultimately, while East Midlands importers and exporters stand to gain significantly by doing business with one the world's fastest-growing economies, they should not lose sight of the importance of undertaking detailed due diligence before embracing the dragon."
