Derby South MP Margaret Beckett was given an insight into the impact of high fuel prices and the credit crunch on local companies when she attended a meeting organised by business leaders.
The former Foreign Secretary listened to the views of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber members at its latest Meet the MP event, which took place this week at Derby Conference Centre, in London Road.
The chamber's policy and representation manager, Nick Chischniak, said: "The meeting covered a broad range of topics such as the need for ongoing investment in skills, research and development and infrastructure, but rising costs seemed to dominate. There is considerable belt-tightening going on.
"Disposable income is being affected by the price of fuel and utilities, and members reported they are travelling smarter - either travelling together or arranging more than one meeting at a particular destination to avoid repeat-travel and increased expense."
